Top Tips for Remembering and Using Taught Spellings in KS2 Writing

Learning to spell words correctly is a crucial skill in Key Stage 2 (KS2) that enhances the clarity and quality of children’s writing. Here are some top tips, supported by theories on why they work, to help children remember and use taught spellings effectively in their writing. These techniques can be adapted to different learning styles, so it’s worth introducing all of them to help each child discover which ones work best for them. The more these strategies are practiced, the easier spelling will become.

1.Look, Say, Cover, Write, Check

Look at the word, say it, cover it, write it from memory, and then check if you got it right. Repeat until you can spell it correctly without looking.

Why It Works: This reduces cognitive load, helping the brain process and remember the word more easily

 2.Use Mnemonics

Create fun memory tricks to remember tricky spellings. For example, for “because”, use the mnemonic “Big Elephants Can Always Understand Small Elephants.”

Why It Works: Combining words with images or memorable phrases boosts memory retention.

3.Write Words in Sentences

Use new words in sentences to understand their context, like “I will definitely finish my homework before dinner.”

Why It Works: This active use of words helps you understand and remember them more effectively.

 4.Practice Regularly

Write the word several times and say it out loud. Regularly ask someone to test you.

Why It Works:  Repetition helps move words from short-term to long-term memory.

5.Use Word Banks and Word Walls

Display words you’re learning on a wall or in a word bank for regular reference.

Why It Works: Regularly seeing and hearing the words reinforces memory.

 6.Check for Patterns

Look for common spelling patterns, such as -tion in “station” and “emotion”, to help you remember similar words.

Why It Works: Recognising patterns groups words together, which reduces cognitive load.

 7.Use Apps and Technology

Try spelling apps or games that make learning enjoyable and test your spelling in interactive ways.

Why It Works: Rewards and positive feedback in apps help reinforce correct spelling.

8.Ask for Help

If you’re struggling with a word, ask your teacher, friends, or family for assistance.

Why It Works: Learning with support helps you master concepts more effectively.

9.Be Patient

Mastering spelling takes time. Keep practising and don’t worry about mistakes.

Why It Works: Consistent practice helps improve spelling over time.
